Intensive TEFL Course Description

We provide you with a 4-week intensive TEFL course in Barcelona, exceeding international standards, with 120 hours of classroom time, including 100 contact hours, and 20 hours devoted to teaching practice (the most important part of any intensive TESOL/TEFL certificate course).

The daily schedule is divided up into theoretical input classes and workshops in the mornings, and practical sessions in the afternoons. This includes lesson planning and production of teaching material, observation and guidance from experienced teachers, as well as teaching practice, peer observation and feedback sessions.

Problem solving is being taught early-on during our TEFL teacher training intensive courses in Barcelona Spain

We consider teaching practice to be the central component of our 120-hour intensive TEFL courses in Barcelona.

The other aspects of this intensive English teacher training course are designed to enable and support the learning process, which is generated by the teaching practice sessions.

The 20 hours of the teaching practice encompass: observation of experienced teachers, peer teaching, teaching Spanish and Catalan students, peer observation and trainer-led feedback sessions.

All trainee teachers will be asked to teach between 6 and 7 practice lessons each. Class sizes vary from single students (one-to-one classes) to small groups of three or four and larger groups of six to fifteen learners.

The English teaching practice lessons are taught on-site at our locations near the centre of Barcelona.

EFL teaching practice with real students

All assignments and observed teaching practice sessions are assessed, as is participation in the theoretical sessions and workshops and overall professional development on the course.

The assessment of your English teaching practice is continuous, meaning that, above all, your final grade will reflect your progress in teaching. This grade is also based on your ability to reflect on your own teaching and that of others.

Teacher trainees having difficulty with any particular task will be given tutorial help and an opportunity to resubmit work. Feedback is provided after each observed practice lesson.

Trainees will be expected to have achieved a satisfactory standard in all areas, including teaching, by the end of the course.

Course Structure

In order for you to gain an inside view of the language learning process, and to be able to empathise with your future students, you will be given three lessons in an unknown foreign language during the first week of your TEFL course.

These lessons will be taught entirely in the foreign language using the same communicative methodology you will use to teach English. This will provide you with first-hand insights into various teaching strategies and techniques, which you will be asked to reflect on, from the perspective of both student and teacher.

  • Grammar:
Through a series of input sessions and teaching workshops throughout your intensive 120-hour TEFL course in Barcelona, you will be introduced to all the basic grammar you will need to be an effective EFL teacher. These sessions will also provide you with useful teaching ideas to help teach grammar in a communicative manner.
  • Phonology:
    • Study the English sound system and compare it to the sound systems of Spanish and other European languages.
    • Get to grips with the use of I.P.A. (International Phonemic Alphabet) in EFL teaching.
    • Understand consonants, vowels and diphthongs in British and American English – and how to teach them.
    • Explore word stress patterns.
    • Study sentence stress, rhythm and intonation.
    • Learn about the features of connected speech.

  • Our lesson planning sessions take place in the afternoons after lunch, between 14:00 and 16:00. This is a time for you to prepare your lessons by adapting activities from existing English teaching course books or by creating your own materials. It is however advisable to come to these sessions with lessons already partially prepared.
  • During the first hour of the session, one of your teacher trainers will be available for consultations and to offer guidance and suggestions on how to improve your lesson plans.
  • The second hour is for you to finalise the preparations of your materials and English lessons.

  • Lesson demos and workshops:
    • You will be given demonstrations of various skill lesson types. We will look at the most suitable lesson structures for focusing on specific English teaching skills (speaking, listening, reading or writing) and sub-skills (grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary).
    • We will also look at planning lessons based on different models such as PPP (Presentation, Practice, Production), ARC (Authentic use, Restricted use, Clarification) and TBL (Task-Based Learning).
  • Learning styles:
    • Together we will look into the various learning styles and explore the various teaching techniques for each.

    • Presentation techniques: demo and peer teaching workshop.
    • Teacher language: the art of giving clear, concise instructions.
    • Class management: techniques for maintaining a productive learning environment.

A reflective journal based on your 3 hours of tuition in a foreign language. After each lesson, you will be encouraged to write up your observations and reflections on your learning experience, both from the perspective of a student and teacher.
  • Student profile project
During the course, you will also complete a written assignment preparing a lesson for a student in a one-to-one setting. This will be completed over two sessions with a foreign language student. The first meeting is done to assess the learner’s needs and linguistic ability. During the second meeting, you will teach a lesson you have prepared based on the assessment.
  • Language analysis test
Towards the end of the course, you will be tested on aspects of grammar and phonology.
This test will be based on the grammar input sessions and the grammar and phonology worksheets done in class.

During your 120-hour intensive TEFL course in Barcelona, you will teach a minimum of 8 English lessons. 6 of these lessons will be taught at the school and observed by a teacher trainer.

In the post teaching critique sessions, you will be encouraged to develop the ability to assess both your own English lessons and those of your peers. We will ensure you teach at least two different levels of EFL learners, e.g. elementary and intermediate, and a good cross-section of age groups and abilities.

The assessment of your teaching practice is continuous and will tend to reflect your overall progress.

Course and Work Testimonials

Melanie Valerga (Gibraltar)

Our graduate Melanie Valerga is now confident when teaching grammar“When I started thinking of studying to become an English teacher I was terrified about teaching grammar as I had never really studied it.

When I started the course there were days that I thought, ”Oh wow, I’m going to have to teach this!!”

Luckily for me, I got a job in an academy a week after finishing the course, so everything was fresh in my mind.

I started working with children, which is fun if you have a good group. Very soon I was asked to take over a group of adults.

That was more challenging as adults want to know why and how everything works. When I prepare the class I have to study the grammar to make sure they don’t catch me out on anything.

I’m enjoying being an English teacher very much. I recommend it to everyone who speaks English well”.

Stephanie Rhawie (US)

“Since finishing the TEFL course, things have been going so well. It took me one week after finishing the course to land my first job at a school in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi for a summer camp. I am one of the main English teachers and every day is a new day.

I plan the lessons, I interact with the children and help out with other school activities.

For one week during this camp, we went to La Garrotxa and what an experience that was!

Since being at this school, more opportunities have arrived. I’ve met parents who now want me to do private lessons with their children and the word spread and I am in contact with a few families now. It’s funny how things work out.

Besides teaching, I am loving living in Barcelona. It is one of the most amazing cities I have been to. I have met the most amazing people, eaten the best food, and explored/still exploring this historic city. I am so happy that the TEFL program exists because, without it, I don’t think I would be here in Barcelona.

Overall, I would recommend the course to everyone without hesitation. The teachers are amazing; the people I met through the course are still my friends till this day, and it gave me the knowledge I needed about teaching English”.

Hanna Guenther (USA)

Hanna Gunther the US testifies that finding work in Barcelona requires a bit of patience, during holidays months“Finding teaching work in Barcelona requires patience, persistence and flexibility. However, finding students is not an issue because so many people are wanting to learn English for their jobs or for school.

At first, your schedule may seem scattered, but once you gain some consistency, it smooths out and becomes much more enjoyable.

If you decide to come to Barcelona to teach, beware of holiday months (December and August). People leave the city for one month and work is slow. I’ve been teaching English in Barcelona for five months now and have had a wonderful time.

I got here in January to get certified and though only four weeks long, the TEFL course I took with you, Lisa, Jamie and Michael provided enough information and hands-on teaching experience so that when I graduated in early February I felt ready to start teaching right away.

Some of my more proactive classmates actually got hired and started getting paid to teach before we had even completed the course!

Once January and September roll around, you will hardly have to look for students. People will come to you.

It is a challenging job but so incredibly rewarding to help someone communicate in a new language. I would highly recommend teaching abroad if you are interested in education, languages or travelling”.
