You may, or may not, have heard of a TEFL certificate before, but most people do not know the potential it holds to fast-track your access to countries around the world whilst already having a stable job guaranteed. You may wonder, what are the job opportunities available abroad, what countries are offering the best salary for TEFL tutors, how can I get a TEFL certificate that is recognised worldwide, or what can a TEFL certificate do for me? In this blog I will tell a little bit about my story of moving to Spain with TEFLBarcelona, and how I broadened my horizons obtaining my Level 5, 190-hour, TEFL certificate.

How I got TEFL Certified

I moved to Barcelona lost with no route for a visa in sight. After months of searching, I came across TEFLBarcelona and after meeting with the kind owner I was sold that this was the route for me. Signing up to a TEFL course along with 6 months of Spanish language classes meant I had security in the country under the student visa, cultural immersion with the Spanish lessons, and an open door to endless career possibilities abroad with my new TEFL certificate. This offered me a foundation to my dreams of travelling across the world, making my fantasy a reality. Now, not only could I live in the hotspot city of Barcelona for the year, I could continue on to travel to my other dream destinations with a source of income already lined-up.

TEFL Pathways and Travel

International travel is a dream of many: whether its backpacking across Europe, or luxury wine tourism. Whatever your taste, TEFL opens up the doors to all of it, it’s just about finding the right path for you. TEFL is incredibly flexible: you can set up your own online or in-person tutoring business and scale from there; you can teach on pre-made tutoring sites if you want to work remote without the business side of things; you can find in-person positions in the country of your dreams and make the move. Whatever route you pick, there are always possibilities to scale, grow, explore, travel, and learn.

What can TEFL do for me?

For the ambitious money-makers, countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia lead the pack, offering tax-free monthly salaries between $2,200 and $5,500 for qualified TEFL teachers. South Korea and China aren’t far behind, often bundling free flights and accommodation into the deal, so you can save a serious chunk of your income while you’re out there.

For the explorers, countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Colombia and Morocco are hard to beat. They combine steady demand for TEFL teachers with a low cost of living, rich culture, and easy access to backpacking routes, so you can fund your next adventure while you’re already living it.

For those who are still figuring things out, websites like Cambly, Preply and iTalki allow for you to earn money and practise your teaching before you make the leap of moving abroad.

Where to get started?

There’s something for everyone in TEFL, and TEFLBarcelona offers high-quality, highly-recognised courses in TEFL, Spanish classes and business classes so you can pair your studies with additional skills to propel your career forward.
I started small, teaching English to Spanish friends in Barcelona. This early experience did wonders for my confidence and helped me build out my skillset. One of these friends needed English for a job opportunity, which pushed me into the niche of business English.

To develop personalised lessons for his needs, I drew on free online resources like the Market Leader and Business Result workbooks (both easy to find as PDFs), focusing especially on sales language and pitching. This friend became my first loyal student, and the six-month deadline he set for himself kept me motivated to deliver real results.

Moving to Online Tutoring Platforms

With this experience under my belt, I applied to online tutoring platforms like Preply and iTalki, using business English as my selling point while still teaching general English to students who wanted it. Students came from all over the world, and as I built up reviews, my profile gained more visibility – creating a kind of snowball effect toward steady bookings.

Don’t Undervalue Yourself Early On

If there’s one piece of advice I’d give anyone starting out, it’s this: don’t work for less than you’re worth.

Platforms like Preply already take a significant cut when you’re starting (commission begins at 33%). So if you’re charging their recommended $10/hour, you’re really only earning around $7/hour. Depending on where you live, that might be workable. But after moving back to the UK, that translated to roughly £5/hour — a fraction of the UK’s minimum wage of just under £13/hour.

Your progress may feel slower than other tutors’ at first, but I’d strongly recommend setting your prices at a rate you’re actually comfortable with from day one, rather than underselling yourself to rack up reviews. If you don’t make this change early, you risk resenting your first students – their rate stays locked in at whatever you originally charged (say, $10), even as your listed price rises, unless you renegotiate. And renegotiating comes with its own risk: losing students who can’t afford the new rate.

Going Independent

Once you’ve built a solid client base and developed real relationships with your students, it’s worth considering a shift to private tutoring outside these platforms. Technically, this isn’t allowed under sites like Preply’s terms – but in practice, as long as you have a way of contacting your students directly, you won’t run into trouble for going independent.

Making this move myself was the best decision I made for my financial success. It let me escape the high commission rates and build a client base made up entirely of loyal, direct students.

Building Toward Freedom

From there, the path is about growth – branching into new markets and niches until you’re earning enough to work as a full-time, self-employed tutor, on your own terms, at your own rates, and on your own schedule.

This kind of freedom is something more people are chasing every day, as digital nomad living and remote work become increasingly suited to modern life. If that’s the kind of freedom you’ve been looking for, it all starts with a TEFL course.

Online English classes have opened up an incredible range of opportunities for teachers and learners alike. As a teacher, you can now work with students from anywhere in the world without leaving your home, and learners can access high-quality lessons without being limited by geography. But while the flexibility is great, it also comes with two big challenges: keeping students engaged during lessons and finding students in the first place.

In this article, we’ll explore practical strategies that you can use to make your online English classes engaging and effective, and, at the end, we’ll also look at how to actually get these students so you can put your skills into practice.

Start Strong: The First Few Minutes Matter

The opening moments of your class set the tone for everything that follows. If you begin with a flat “Hello, how are you?” and a review of last week’s homework, your student’s energy may dip before the class even begins. Instead, aim to grab their attention right away.

Here are some easy ways to start strong:

Ask a curious or funny question: “What’s the strangest food you’ve ever tried?” or “If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?”

Show a picture or short video: Use an unusual image or meme that relates to your lesson theme.

Quick icebreaker game: For example, a one-minute quiz using tools like Kahoot or Mentimeter.

By making the start of the class interactive, you immediately signal that the lesson will be active and not just another passive Zoom call.

Use Technology Wisely

One of the advantages of online English classes is the access to interactive tools. But with so many options available, it’s easy to overwhelm both yourself and your students. Instead of using every platform you can find, choose two or three that truly enhance your lessons.

Some teacher favorites include:

Google Docs: Acts as a shared whiteboard where students can write together in real time.

Jamboard or Canva: Perfect for visual learners and collaborative activities.

Padlet: Helps organize vocabulary, notes, or even homework tasks in a visual way.

The goal isn’t to use technology for the sake of it but to create meaningful interaction. For example, rather than simply sharing a grammar exercise, use a Google Doc where both you and the student can add sentences and corrections together.

Break Lessons into Short, Interactive Segments

One of the biggest mistakes new online teachers make is running their online English classes exactly like a traditional in-person class. Online attention spans are shorter, so you need to adapt.

Think of your lesson as a series of short “blocks” rather than one long lecture. For example:

Warm-up activity (5 minutes)

Presentation of new language (10 minutes)

Controlled practice (10 minutes)

Interactive activity (roleplay, game, discussion) (15 minutes)

Reflection and wrap-up (5 minutes)

By constantly shifting between activities, you prevent students from zoning out. Also, check in often by asking open questions, not just “yes/no” ones. The more the student speaks, the more engaged they stay.

Adapt Materials for Online Learning

Not every classroom activity translates well into an online environment. Flashcards, board games, or pair work exercises need to be re-imagined when you teach online. That doesn’t mean you need to throw them out — just adapt them.

For example:

Replace paper flashcards with digital slides or interactive vocabulary apps.

Use Zoom breakout rooms for roleplays or debates in pairs.

Create simple visuals that can be shared on screen to support explanations.

Don’t be afraid to mix authentic materials into your lessons. News articles, YouTube clips, and even social media posts are excellent ways to bring the real world into your class, while also sparking discussion.

Encourage Camera Use and Presence

Teaching to a black screen is one of the most demotivating experiences for online teachers. Whenever possible, encourage students to keep their cameras on. Explain that seeing facial expressions and body language makes communication more natural and helps both teacher and student.

Of course, some learners may not feel comfortable with video. In those cases, look for alternative ways to keep them present:

Ask them to participate actively in the chat.

Use screen sharing to involve them in exercises.

Incorporate short voice recordings as homework tasks.

The key is ensuring that even without a camera, the student is still an active participant in the class.

Assign Short and Meaningful Homework

Homework doesn’t need to be long or complicated. In fact, shorter, more meaningful tasks are often far more effective in keeping students motivated.

Examples include:

Record a one-minute voice note about your day.

Write a short email about a real-life situation.

Watch a short video clip and prepare a two-sentence summary.

These tasks are quick, practical, and directly connected to real communication. Students are far more likely to complete them, and they can be used as natural springboards for your next lesson.

Focus on Long-Term Motivation

Engagement is not just about keeping students active in one lesson; it’s about keeping them excited to return for the next one. Building long-term motivation is critical for student retention in online English classes.

Some strategies include:

Set clear goals: For example, preparing to give a short presentation in English after three months.

Track progress: Show students how their skills have improved by comparing earlier recordings with current ones.

Celebrate milestones: Create mini “review lessons” at the end of each month where students see how much they’ve learned.

When students see clear progress, they are far more likely to stay motivated and continue their lessons.

Be Flexible and Human

Above all, remember that your students are real people, not just faces on a screen. Life happens: internet connections drop, children run into the room, or students arrive tired after work. Show patience and flexibility in these moments.

Sometimes, simply adapting on the spot — for example, sending a quick exercise by email if the platform crashes — can turn a potentially frustrating situation into a positive one. Students remember teachers who are empathetic and adaptable, and this builds trust and loyalty.

But How Do You Get These Students in the First Place?

Of course, none of these strategies matter if you don’t actually have students to teach. Many new online teachers wonder how to find their first learners. The good news is that there are several proven ways to attract students:

Online teaching platforms: Websites like Preply, italki, or Cambly connect teachers directly with learners worldwide. While competition can be high, they are a great starting point to gain experience and build reviews.

Social media presence: Sharing short teaching tips, vocabulary posts, or mini lessons on Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn can help you reach students organically. Even a simple professional profile with a clear offer can bring in leads.

Word of mouth: Friends, family, and past students are often the best promoters. Don’t be afraid to ask for referrals.

Specialisation: Offering something specific — such as English for interviews, business English, or exam preparation — makes it easier to stand out in a crowded market.

Once you begin attracting students, apply the engagement strategies from this article to keep them motivated, satisfied, and eager to continue with you.

Keep lessons engaging!

Teaching online is not just about transferring your in-person lesson plans to Zoom. It requires creativity, flexibility, and an understanding of how to keep students engaged in a digital environment. By starting your lessons with energy, using technology strategically, breaking up lessons into short segments, adapting materials, and focusing on long-term motivation, you can create online English classes that are both effective and enjoyable.

For teachers starting their journey, mastering engagement techniques is just as important as mastering grammar explanations. After all, a motivated student is a learning student — and when you also learn how to market yourself and find those students, you open the door to a sustainable online teaching career.

Let’s be honest – teaching English online isn’t always easy, right? You start the class full of energy, but by the halfway point, you notice students getting distracted, looking like they’re somewhere else (maybe even scrolling on their phones). It’s not their fault entirely – learning online can feel distant and unmotivating at times.

As a fellow teacher, I get it. Keeping students engaged online takes a whole new set of skills. What works in a classroom doesn’t always translate to a virtual setting, and we often find ourselves trying to compete with whatever else is going on in their lives. That’s why I’ve spent time figuring out what really works to hold their attention and make lessons interactive.

If you’ve faced those challenges too, don’t worry. In this article, I’ll share 7 strategies that have worked for me to keep students engaged, motivated, and even excited about learning English online. They’re simple, practical, and teacher-tested—so let’s jump in!

1. Start with an Icebreaker

Icebreakers are more than just warm-ups – they’re an essential tool for building a connection with your students and setting the tone for the lesson. A good icebreaker can break down barriers, get everyone talking, and put students in the right mindset to learn.

Examples:

Two Truths and a Lie: Each student says two true statements and one false statement about themselves. The rest of the class guesses which one is the lie. This is great for getting to know your students and encouraging conversation.

Quick Polls: Use your platform’s poll feature to ask fun questions like, “What’s the best pizza topping?” or “If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?” This gets everyone participating and talking.

Category Challenge: Pick a category (e.g., animals, colors, or cities), and have each student name something in that category in 5 seconds. It’s fast, fun, and energizing.

Why it works:

Icebreakers create a relaxed environment and make students feel comfortable, which is essential for active participation.

2. Use Visuals and Props

A lesson full of words and text can feel boring and overwhelming, especially for visual learners. Adding visuals and props can bring your lessons to life and help students understand concepts more easily.

Examples:

Digital Visuals: Share colorful slides, pictures, or GIFs. For instance, if you’re teaching vocabulary about food, show images of pizza, sushi, or salads to make the words more relatable.

Real-Life Props: Hold up real items during your lesson. For example, if you’re teaching about objects in the kitchen, grab a spoon, fork, or cup from your own kitchen to show students.

Videos: Play a short video related to the lesson topic. For example, when teaching “travel,” show a quick clip of someone booking a flight or exploring a destination.

Why it works:

Visuals make lessons more engaging, help clarify meanings, and keep students interested in what you’re teaching.

3. Incorporate Interactive Tools

Online teaching platforms often come with built-in tools like polls, quizzes, and whiteboards. Using these tools makes your lessons interactive and keeps students actively involved rather than just passively listening.

Examples:

Live Quizzes: Use tools like Kahoot or Quizizz to create quick, competitive quizzes on vocabulary or grammar topics.

Annotate the Screen: Share a document or slide and let students circle or underline answers directly on the screen. For example, when teaching prepositions, show a picture of a desk and have students mark where the book is (“on,” “under,” or “beside” the desk).

Drawing Activities: Ask students to draw something related to the lesson using the whiteboard feature. For example, “Draw your favorite hobby” when teaching about activities.

Why it works:

Interactive tools turn passive learners into active participants, making lessons feel more like a game than a lecture.

4. Plan Short, Focused Activities

Online students have shorter attention spans, so breaking your lesson into smaller, bite-sized activities is key to keeping them engaged. A mix of tasks keeps things fresh and prevents boredom.

Examples:

Quick Vocabulary Games: Spend 5 minutes on a vocabulary game like “Guess the Word” where you describe a word, and students have to guess it.

Listening Tasks: Play a short audio clip, such as a weather report or an announcement, and ask students to identify key details. For example, “What time is the train leaving?”

Speaking Challenges: Give students 2 minutes to talk about their weekend or their favorite hobby. This gets them speaking without feeling pressured.

Why it works:

Frequent changes in activity keep students energized and make the lesson feel dynamic rather than monotonous.

5. Encourage Participation with Open Questions

One common challenge in online classes is getting students to speak. Many are shy or afraid of making mistakes. Open-ended questions are a great way to encourage them to participate and share their thoughts.

Examples:

Simple Conversation Starters: Instead of asking, “Do you like music?” (which might get a simple “yes” or “no”), ask, “What kind of music do you listen to, and why?”

Storytelling Prompts: Ask students to share an experience, like “Tell me about the last time you went on a trip” or “What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten?”

Problem-Solving Tasks: Pose a problem and ask students for their solutions. For example, “Imagine you’re planning a party with a small budget. What would you do?”

Why it works:

Open questions encourage critical thinking and give students a chance to practice longer sentences and express their ideas.

6. Use Breakout Rooms for Group Work

Breakout rooms are a fantastic feature for promoting collaboration and teamwork in online classes. They give students a chance to work in smaller groups, which feels less intimidating than speaking in front of the whole class.

Examples:

Role-Playing Scenarios: Assign roles and tasks, such as one student being the “shopkeeper” and another the “customer” in a conversation about shopping.

Group Discussions: Give each group a question to discuss, such as “What are the pros and cons of living in a big city?”

Peer Reviews: Ask students to work together to edit a paragraph or solve a grammar exercise.

Why it works:

Breakout rooms allow quieter students to participate more actively and give everyone more speaking opportunities.

7. Celebrate Progress

Everyone loves feeling recognized for their efforts, and your students are no different! Celebrating their progress keeps them motivated and shows them that their hard work is paying off.

Examples:

Verbal Praise: Say things like, “Great job using the past tense, Maria!” or “Excellent pronunciation, John!”

Progress Tracking: Create a simple chart or leaderboard to track student achievements, like mastering 10 new vocabulary words or improving their speaking fluency.

Fun Rewards: End the class with a light-hearted game or activity as a reward for their hard work. For example, play a quick game of “20 Questions” where students guess a mystery word.

Why it works:

Becoming an English teacher opens up a world of incredible opportunities. Whether you want to explore new countries, work remotely, or engage with students from diverse backgrounds, teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) offers a fulfilling and rewarding career.

If you’re considering becoming an English teacher, you might wonder if it’s worth investing time and money in a TEFL course. The short answer: absolutely! Let’s break down why this path is worth exploring and how it can help you achieve your personal and professional goals.

Why Become an English Teacher?

1.- Endless Travel Opportunities One of the biggest attractions of becoming an English teacher is the chance to live and work in different countries. English is the world’s most widely spoken second language, meaning there’s a high demand for teachers in countries like Spain, Japan, South Korea, and many more.

Teaching English abroad gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in new cultures, learn new languages, and explore the world, all while earning a salary.

2.- Flexibility and Freedom Beyond teaching in traditional schools, English teachers have the flexibility to work online. Online teaching has skyrocketed in recent years, with many teachers offering private lessons or working for established platforms from the comfort of their homes.

This flexibility allows teachers to create their own schedules, take on as many students as they want, and enjoy the freedom to work from anywhere with an internet connection.

3.- Making a Real Impact Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions, and teaching English is no exception. You get to help students improve their language skills, which can open doors for them in terms of education, career opportunities, and personal growth. Many English learners are motivated to learn for job promotions, study abroad, or connect with people globally.

As a teacher, you get to be a part of their journey and make a meaningful impact on their lives.

4.- A Growing Demand for English Teachers The demand for qualified English teachers continues to grow. With globalization and international business communication heavily relying on English, more schools, language institutions, and online platforms are hiring TEFL-certified teachers to meet the need.

Whether you’re in a major city or a more remote location, there’s always a need for English teachers, ensuring job security and consistent opportunities.

The Value of TEFL Certification

Now that you understand the perks of teaching English, let’s talk about how a TEFL course can help you get there. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is essential for anyone who wants to teach English abroad or online. It equips you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in the classroom.

Here are some reasons why investing in a TEFL course is worth it:

1.- Gain Teaching Skills While you may already be fluent in English, teaching the language is a completely different skill. A TEFL course helps you understand how to create effective lesson plans, manage a classroom, teach grammar, and develop engaging activities for students.

You’ll learn techniques to motivate learners, assess their progress, and provide meaningful feedback.

2.- Hands-On Experience Most reputable TEFL courses include practical teaching components. At TEFL Barcelona, for instance, we offer hands-on teaching practice with real students. This allows you to gain valuable experience and build your confidence before stepping into a full-time teaching role.

Our courses include at least seven hours of face-to-face teaching practice, so you’ll leave feeling ready to take on the classroom.

3.- Internationally Recognized Certification A TEFL certification is recognized worldwide, making it your passport to teaching opportunities across the globe. Whether you want to work in Asia, Europe, or Latin America, a TEFL certificate opens doors to well-paying jobs in various countries.

At TEFL Barcelona, we offer internationally recognized certifications such as the 120-hour TEFL course accredited by Lamar University, the 160-hour Trinity CertTESOL course accredited by Trinity College London, and the 190-hour TQUK Level 5 Award in TESOL.

4.- Job Support Completing a TEFL course doesn’t just give you a certificate—it provides you with access to career support and job placement assistance.

At TEFL Barcelona, we go the extra mile to support our graduates in finding teaching jobs after they complete their courses. Our network of schools, agencies, and private clients around Barcelona ensures that our trainees can quickly secure teaching positions.

5.- Work in Amazing Locations With a TEFL certificate, you can work in beautiful destinations like Spain, Thailand, or Costa Rica. In Spain, for example, English teachers are highly sought after, especially in cities like Barcelona.

By completing a TEFL course with us in Barcelona, you’ll not only get to live in one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, but you’ll also be able to take advantage of the high demand for English teachers in the region.

The world has been changing rapidly, and one of the biggest drivers of this change is Artificial Intelligence (AI). We see it all around us – in smartphones that predict what we want to text, in online shopping recommendations, and in virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa. AI is also making its way into fields that once seemed distant from technology, such as education.

In particular, the impact of AI on Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is growing every day, creating new opportunities for both teachers and students. From automating routine tasks like grading or lesson planning to providing personalized feedback for students, AI is reshaping what it means to teach and learn English.

This doesn’t mean AI is here to replace teachers—in fact, it’s quite the opposite. AI is here to improve what teachers already do, making their jobs easier and more efficient while allowing them to focus on what really matters: connecting with their students and delivering high-quality lessons.

For those already in the field of TEFL or considering a career in teaching English abroad, understanding how AI is transforming the classroom can be both exciting and necessary. With the growing demand for personalized learning and digital tools, teachers who are aware of the potential of AI can improve their teaching methods, engage students more effectively, and make better use of their time.

At the same time, students are becoming more tech-savvy, expecting teachers to integrate modern tools into their lessons. Keeping up with these trends can give you an edge in the classroom and make your lessons more engaging and relevant.

That said, while AI can certainly improve the TEFL classroom experience, it’s also important to be aware of the challenges and limitations. Like any tool, AI should be used thoughtfully. It’s crucial to strike a balance between technology and the human touch that is so essential to teaching.

In this article, we’ll explore how AI is shaping the TEFL world – how it can help teachers, what tools are available, and what the future might look like. We’ll also take a closer look at some of the potential downsides and why AI, despite its benefits, should always be seen as a support tool rather than a replacement for teachers.

The Role of AI in TEFL

In the field of TEFL, AI is not here to replace teachers. Instead, it provides valuable tools that can support teachers, making their job easier and lessons more effective. AI can handle repetitive tasks, offer personalized learning experiences for students, and provide real-time feedback. This allows teachers to focus more on teaching and less on administrative or routine tasks.

The introduction of AI into the TEFL classroom is changing the way teachers interact with students. By using AI tools, teachers can personalize lessons, assess students’ progress more easily, and even offer more support to students who need it.

Benefits of AI for TEFL Teachers

AI tools provide several key benefits for teachers in the TEFL field:

Time-saving:

AI can automate repetitive tasks such as creating quizzes or correcting grammar, allowing teachers to focus on more important aspects like student engagement.

Personalized learning:

AI can analyze student data and help teachers adjust lessons to meet individual student needs. This ensures that no student is left behind, and everyone gets the help they need.

Instant feedback:

AI-powered tools can provide immediate feedback to students on their work, helping them correct mistakes right away. This also reduces the teacher’s workload when it comes to marking assignments.

Data insights:

With AI, teachers can easily track a student’s progress over time and identify areas where they might be struggling. This data-driven approach helps teachers make more informed decisions about lesson planning and student support.

Disadvantages and Challenges of AI in TEFL

While AI offers many advantages, it also comes with some challenges. Here are a few things to consider:

Over-reliance on Technology:

There’s a risk that teachers might become too dependent on AI tools, leading to less personal interaction with students. It’s important to remember that AI is a tool, not a replacement for the teacher’s role in guiding, mentoring, and motivating students.

Lack of Human Touch:

While AI can provide immediate feedback, it lacks the human empathy and understanding that students often need. TEFL teaching is about building relationships with students, understanding their emotions, and encouraging them—things AI can’t do.

Cost and Accessibility:

Some AI tools come with a cost, which might be a barrier for teachers working in schools with limited resources. Additionally, not all students may have access to the technology needed to use AI-powered learning tools.

Potential Job Insecurity:

There’s a concern that as AI becomes more advanced, it could replace certain teaching tasks or roles. However, AI should be seen as a tool to help teachers rather than something that will take away jobs. Human interaction and judgment are essential in teaching, and AI cannot replace those skills.

The Future of AI in the TEFL Classroom

Despite these challenges, AI has a bright future in the TEFL world. As technology continues to improve, AI will likely play an even bigger role in classrooms, making it easier for teachers to manage their lessons and provide students with the personalized support they need.

The good news is that AI can help teachers focus on what really matters—connecting with students, guiding them through their learning experiences, and helping them reach their full potential. AI is already making classrooms more efficient and dynamic, and in the future, it will likely take on even more administrative tasks, giving teachers more time to engage with their students.

Additionally, AI tools can help bridge language barriers in multicultural classrooms, making it easier for students from different language backgrounds to learn English. The technology will continue to evolve, bringing new opportunities for both teachers and students.

AI Tools for TEFL Teachers

While tools like Duolingo are great for students, TEFL teachers also need AI tools that can help them create better lessons and manage their classrooms effectively. Here are some AI-powered tools specifically designed to help TEFL teachers:

1.-Teachermatic:

This AI tool helps teachers generate lesson plans based on specific topics, levels, and student needs. By automating the planning process, Teachermatic saves teachers time and ensures that lessons are tailored to their students.&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/li>

2.- Quillionz:

Quillionz is an AI-powered tool that helps teachers create quizzes, tests, and assessments based on the content they upload. This can be particularly helpful w

hen creating review materials or checking students’ understanding of a lesson.

3.- Edpuzzle:

This tool uses AI to turn any video into an interactive lesson. Teachers can add questions, track students’ engagement, and get insights into their understanding. This is especially useful for online or blended learning environments.

4.- Google Classroom with AI Add-ons:

Google Classroom offers AI integrations to help teachers manage assignments, provide instant feedback, and track student performance. The system also allows teachers to monitor student progress more effectively.

5.- Canva for Education:

While Canva is known for design, its AI features allow teachers to quickly create visually appealing presentations, worksheets, and educational content. Canva for Education is designed with teachers in mind, providing templates and easy tools to enhance lesson materials.

Preparing for the Future: TEFL Training and AI Integration

As AI becomes more common in TEFL, it’s important to remember that teaching is still about human connection.

Teaching pronunciation to students can be an interesting task, especially when their first language affects how they understand and say English sounds. Some English words and sounds can be really hard, making it tough for students who find pronunciation tricky.

As teachers, we get the challenges of teaching pronunciation, from noticing the small differences between ‘th’ sounds in “thought” and “though” to getting the tricky ‘r’ in “rural” right.

Getting through these pronunciation challenges needs patience, creativity, and a really good understanding of each student’s own language background. It’s all about striking the right balance between correcting them and cheering them on, making sure students feel helped, not put off by the complex parts of English pronunciation.

As teachers, we’re always looking for new ways to make pronunciation practice more fun and less scary for our students. Whether it’s with interactive games that make everyone feel lighter or with songs that bring music into learning language, our aim is to create a classroom where students can try out sounds and rhythms without being scared of making mistakes.

With this in mind, finding creative ways to teach pronunciation isn’t just about trying out new teaching methods; it’s about creating a classroom vibe where curiosity and trying new things lead to getting better at the language. By using these lively methods, we can guide our students through the tough parts of English pronunciation with confidence and a spirit of discovery.

10 Fun Ways to Teach Pronunciation

1. Tongue Twisters

Tongue twisters are a playful and effective way to improve pronunciation skills. They work by repeating similar sounds quickly, which helps students focus on articulating challenging phonemes. Starting with easier tongue twisters allows learners to warm up, and as they grow more confident, you can introduce more complex sequences.

For instance, “She sells seashells by the seashore” targets the ‘sh’ and ‘s’ sounds, requiring the speaker to switch rapidly between these two sounds. This not only aids in mastering the sounds themselves but also improves overall speech fluidity and agility.

Benefits: Improve diction and clarity; fun and engaging repetition; suitable for all ages.

2. Sing Along

Incorporating music into language learning through sing-alongs can make pronunciation practice more dynamic and memorable. English songs often feature a wide range of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and varied sentence structures, offering a rich linguistic environment.

By singing, students can naturally absorb the rhythm, stress patterns, and intonation of English speech, which are crucial components of fluent pronunciation. A song like “Yesterday” by The Beatles can introduce learners to different vowel sounds and the natural melody of English language.

Benefits: Natural learning of rhythm and intonation; exposure to colloquial language; enjoyable group activity.

3. Minimal Pairs Bingo

Minimal pairs are pairs of words that differ by only one sound, such as ‘bat’ and ‘pat.’ Playing bingo with these pairs turns a traditional pronunciation drill into an interactive game. Each time a word is called, students must listen carefully to identify the subtle difference in sound, enhancing their auditory discrimination skills.

This is particularly beneficial for sounds that don’t exist in the learners’ native languages or for those that are easily confused.

Benefits: Sharpens listening skills; introduces phonetic nuances; fosters a competitive yet fun learning environment.

4. Role-plays

Role-playing activities immerse students in real-life situations where they must use target language patterns, making the learning experience more meaningful and practical. This method encourages spontaneous use of language, pushing students to apply their pronunciation skills in context.

For example, staging a role-play in a restaurant setting can practice food-related vocabulary and polite requests, offering a natural setting to work on intonation and stress.

Benefits: Contextual learning; boosts confidence in speaking; enhances communicative competence.

5. Use Phonetic Alphabet

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) provides a consistent way to represent the sounds of spoken language. Teaching students the IPA symbols associated with English sounds demystifies pronunciation and gives them a tool they can use to independently learn new words.

For example, understanding the symbol for the ‘th’ sound can help learners correctly pronounce both ‘thing’ and ‘this,’ differentiating between voiced and voiceless variations. Using IPA can turn abstract pronunciation rules into tangible, visual cues.

Benefits: Promotes autonomy in learning; aids in accurate pronunciation of new vocabulary; bridges the gap between written and spoken language.

6. Pronunciation Videos

Online pronunciation videos offer a visual and auditory resource for mastering English sounds. These videos often feature native speakers demonstrating the correct mouth movements and sound production, which can be particularly helpful for visual learners.

For instance, videos that show the difference between the ‘v’ and ‘w’ sounds can help students see how the lips and teeth should be positioned.

This method allows learners to pause, rewind, and mimic the speaker at their own pace, turning passive watching into an active learning experience.

Benefits: Visual and auditory learning; allows for self-paced practice; access to native speaker models.

7. Voice Recording

Using voice recording as a tool in pronunciation practice empowers students to become more self-aware and autonomous in their learning process. By recording their own speech and then listening back, students can self-assess their pronunciation against the expected standard.

This technique is particularly effective for highlighting issues with intonation patterns or stress placement that students might not notice in real-time. For example, recording a speech or reading passage can reveal inconsistencies in rhythm or emphasis that the student can then work to correct.

Benefits: Promotes self-assessment and reflection; highlights areas for improvement; facilitates personalized feedback.

8. Interactive Apps

Pronunciation apps integrate gamification into language learning, making the practice more interactive and enjoyable. These apps often include activities like matching games, listening exercises, and pronunciation drills with instant feedback.

For example, an app might use speech recognition technology to rate how accurately a student pronounces phrases, turning improvement into a game-like challenge.

This approach motivates learners by rewarding progress, which can make the repetition inherent in pronunciation practice more engaging.

Benefits: Gamified learning experience; instant feedback; convenient and accessible learning tool.

9. Storytelling

Incorporating storytelling into pronunciation practice allows students to use language creatively while focusing on accurate pronunciation. By narrating a story, learners must employ a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures, providing a rich context for pronunciation practice.

For example, a student might tell a tale from their own culture, paying special attention to the pronunciation of key narrative elements. This not only helps in practicing specific sounds but also enhances fluency and expressive language skills.

Benefits: Contextualizes pronunciation practice; fosters creative use of language; enhances fluency and expression.

10. Pronunciation Journals

Keeping a pronunciation journal encourages students to take an active role in their learning by tracking new words and their pronunciations. This method promotes continuous learning outside the classroom and helps students personalize their study.

For instance, a student might encounter a challenging word in a movie or book, note it in their journal, and practice its pronunciation, using online resources or classroom learnings for reference.

Reviewing and practicing these entries can become a rewarding routine, as students visually track their progress over time.

Benefits: Personalizes learning; encourages independent study; tracks progress and growth in pronunciation.

Get them talking!

By incorporating these 10 engaging techniques into our classrooms, we turn what could be daunting tasks into enjoyable, confidence-building activities. It’s all about fostering an atmosphere where students feel comfortable experimenting with new sounds and where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process.

This approach not only makes lessons more enjoyable but also encourages a deeper, more personal engagement with the language. As we continue to innovate and adapt our teaching methods, we empower our students to navigate the complexities of English pronunciation with ease and enthusiasm.

Teaching English is full of unique challenges, with collocations standing out as one of the trickier aspects to get right. Collocations, those pairs of words that just seem to fit together like “bitter cold” or “heavily influenced,” can sometimes be a puzzle for both learners and educators. They don’t always follow a clear logic, which can make them somewhat difficult to teach.

However, with a dash of creativity and the right set of exercises, teaching collocations can transform into one of the most enjoyable and rewarding parts of English education. This article aims to shed light on effective and engaging ways to teach collocations, making the process both fun for students and satisfying for teachers.

Why Collocations Matter

First off, let’s look into why collocations are such a crucial part of learning English. Collocations help in making speech and writing more fluent and natural. They are the building blocks of language that allow learners to express themselves more accurately and confidently. Yet, the seemingly arbitrary nature of collocations can be confusing. For instance, why do we say “make an effort” rather than “do an effort”? There isn’t always a straightforward answer, which is where the challenge of teaching collocations lies.

Despite this challenge, the ability to use collocations correctly is a sign of advanced language proficiency and is often what sets apart a native-like speaker from a beginner. This makes teaching collocations not just a necessary task, but a fundamentally important one for helping students truly master English.

Engaging Ways to Teach Collocations

Now, onto the fun part—discovering engaging ways to teach collocations. The goal here is to move beyond rote memorization and into activities that spark interest and facilitate deeper learning.

Here are five innovative ways to teach collocations that can bring energy and excitement into your classroom:

Collocation ‘Mix and Match’ Game

Start with a classic ‘Mix and Match’ game. Prepare a set of cards, with half containing the first word of a collocation and the other half with the second word. Spread the cards out, and have students find the pairs that belong together. This can be done as a timed activity to add a competitive edge. For example, pair “strong” with “coffee” or “heavy” with “rain.”

Collocation Story Chains

This activity combines storytelling with collocation practice. Have one student start a story with a sentence that includes a collocation. The next student continues the story with a new sentence that must contain another collocation. This goes on until every student has contributed to the story. Not only does this exercise reinforce collocations, but it also fosters creativity and collaboration.

Collocation Pictionary

Who doesn’t love Pictionary? In this version, students draw representations of collocations without using words or letters, while their classmates try to guess the phrases. This visual approach to learning collocations can be particularly effective for visual learners and adds an element of artistry to language learning.

Find the Collocation’ Challenge

Create a worksheet filled with sentences where collocations have been split up and mixed within the text. Students must identify and reconnect the collocations. This activity is great for reading comprehension and helps students recognize collocations in context.

Collocation Role-Play

Set up role-play scenarios where students must use specific collocations in their dialogue. This can be particularly effective for teaching collocations that are commonly used in everyday situations, such as “break the news,” “catch a bus,” or “make a decision.” Role-playing helps students practice collocations in a conversational context, making the language-learning experience more dynamic and practical.

Collocation Bingo

Create bingo cards with common collocations missing one word. For example, you might have “_____ a mistake” or “catch a _____.” As you call out the missing words, students mark their cards if they can form a correct collocation. This game is not only fun but also reinforces quick recall of collocations.

Collocation ‘Speed Dating’

Arrange the classroom like a speed dating event, where students sit in pairs facing each other. Each pair has a short time to discuss a topic using as many collocations as they can. When time’s up, students rotate to the next partner and a new topic. This activity encourages the spontaneous use of collocations and helps improve fluency.

Summarizing the Importance of Teaching Collocations

In wrapping up, it’s clear that collocations are more than just word pairs; they are the essence of natural-sounding English. For language learners, mastering collocations is a significant step towards fluency, enabling them to express ideas more precisely and confidently. As educators, finding innovative and engaging ways to teach collocations can dramatically improve our students’ language skills.

The activities outlined here, from games like ‘Mix and Match’ and ‘Collocation Bingo’ to creative exercises like ‘Story Chains’ and ‘Speed Dating,’ offer diverse approaches to teaching collocations. They cater to different learning styles, from visual to kinesthetic, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to grasp and retain these crucial language components. Moreover, these activities foster a fun and collaborative learning environment, making the acquisition of collocations an enjoyable experience.

Ultimately, the key to successfully teaching collocations lies in variety and repetition. By regularly incorporating these activities into your lessons and revisiting collocations in different contexts, you can help your students internalize them more effectively. Remember, the goal is not just to teach collocations but to inspire a love for learning and using English in all its richness and complexity.

Teaching languages online has indeed become increasingly popular in recent years. This method of instruction offers unique benefits but also presents specific challenges, particularly when it comes to developing students’ listening skills. The online environment differs significantly from traditional classroom settings, impacting both group and individual lessons in various ways.

Benefits of Teaching Listening Skills Online

Teaching listening skills online is great for many reasons. The internet has lots of cool stuff for listening activities, like podcasts, videos, and music, which makes learning fun and interesting. Plus, when students are in a place they feel comfortable, like their own room, they can listen and understand better.

This makes learning online really good for listening to and understanding English.

Challenges in Teaching Listening Skills Online

When teaching listening online, there are some challenges to think about. In a regular classroom, students get to hear different kinds of sounds and ways people talk, but online, they don’t get as much of this.

Also, it’s harder to see the teacher’s face and hand movements on a computer, which can make it tricky to understand everything. Sometimes, if the internet is not working well or the headphones aren’t good, it can be hard to hear the lessons. And at home, there might be lots of other things happening, like noise or people moving around, which can make it hard for students to focus on their listening.

So, let’s look into 5 listening activities that you can use in your online lessons. These activities are designed to help overcome the challenges of online teaching and make learning both fun and effective for your students.

1. Interactive Storytelling with Twists

How it Works:

The teacher starts a story and randomly selects students to continue it, adding unexpected twists. Each student contributes a sentence or two, and the story develops in unpredictable ways. The class could use a collaborative online document or a live session for this activity.

Why It’s Good:

This activity encourages students to listen attentively to each other, fostering imagination and creativity. It also improves their ability to think on their feet and contribute coherently to an ongoing narrative.

Example:

Start with a simple plot, like a mysterious adventure. After a student adds an element like a secret door in a library, the next student might introduce a talking animal as a guide, and so on. The story’s evolution depends entirely on the students’ creative input.

2. ‘Create Your Advertisement’ Challenge

How it Works:

Students listen to a selection of classic or innovative advertisements. Afterward, they create their own advertisement for a real or fictional product. This can be done through audio recording, using digital tools to add music or sound effects.

Why It’s Good:

This activity hones listening for specific details like slogans, persuasive language, and audio effects. It also encourages creativity in how language can be used persuasively.

Example:

After listening to a famous ad like Apple’s “Think Different,” students create an ad for a futuristic product, focusing on persuasive language and creative sound design.

3. Podcast Club

How it Works:

Similar to a book club, the class listens to a podcast episode before the lesson. During the session, they discuss its content, language use, and any cultural references. Teachers can prepare guiding questions to facilitate deeper analysis.

Why It’s Good:

Podcasts expose students to diverse accents, speeds of speaking, and idiomatic language. The discussion afterward enhances comprehension skills and critical thinking.

Example:

Choose a podcast like “This American Life,” which covers a wide range of topics. Discuss the storytelling techniques used and how they affect the listener’s understanding and engagement.

4. Soundscapes Exploration

How it Works:

The teacher plays various soundscapes (city sounds, nature sounds, etc.). Students then write or verbally share what they imagine based on these sounds, or create a short story or poem inspired by them.

Why It’s Good:

This activity stimulates imagination and descriptive language skills, as students translate auditory experiences into written or spoken narratives.

Example:

Play a bustling city soundscape. Students might write about a day in the life of someone in that city or create a narrative about an exciting event happening within the soundscape.

5. Historical Speeches Analysis

How it Works:

Students listen to famous historical speeches. They then analyze the speech for rhetorical strategies, language use, and historical context. This can be followed by a discussion or a presentation on their findings.

Why It’s Good:

It exposes students to powerful public speaking and enriches their understanding of historical events and figures. Analyzing speeches helps in understanding persuasive language techniques.

Example:

Listen to Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream.” Discuss its historical significance, rhetorical devices like repetition and metaphor, and its impact on the audience.

Bonus Activity: Virtual Cultural Exchange

How it Works:

This activity involves setting up a cultural exchange program with a class from a different country where the target language is spoken. Utilizing video conferencing tools, students from each class pair up or form small groups to discuss various topics, ranging from daily life to cultural customs and traditions.

Each session can have a specific theme or topic, and students prepare by researching and formulating questions or discussion points. This can include sharing music, art, or popular media from their respective cultures.

The sessions are scheduled regularly, allowing for consistent interaction and language practice.

Why It’s Good:

Students engage in real conversations with native speakers, which greatly enhances listening comprehension and conversational skills. They get exposed to colloquial language, different accents, and idiomatic expressions. This activity fosters a deeper understanding of different cultures, which is a critical aspect of language learning. It broadens students’ perspectives and encourages empathy and global awareness.

Interacting with peers from another country can be highly motivating for students. It adds a real-world context to their language learning and makes the learning process more dynamic and engaging.

Example:

An English class in the United States could partner with a class in Spain. In one session, students might discuss typical foods in their countries, sharing recipes and even demonstrating cooking techniques. In another session, they could discuss education systems, comparing and contrasting their experiences.

Each of these activities not only enhances listening skills but also integrates other critical language skills like speaking, writing, and critical thinking. By moving beyond traditional ‘fill in the gaps’ exercises, these activities provide a more dynamic and engaging online learning experience.

Through these diverse and interactive approaches, students are not just passive listeners but become active participants in their learning journey. This shift is crucial in an online environment where engagement can be more challenging to maintain compared to traditional classrooms. Each activity brings a unique set of benefits, ensuring that students develop a comprehensive set of listening and language skills.
