Back in January 2025, I began my TEFL course in Barcelona, Spain. Over the course of an intensive month, I gained hands-on experience teaching in schools and private classrooms, working with students ranging in age from 5 to 80. By the end, I’d earned my 190-hour Level 5 certificate and was fully qualified to start my teaching career.

Finding My Niche

I started small, teaching English to Spanish friends in Barcelona. This early experience did wonders for my confidence and helped me build out my skillset. One of these friends needed English for a job opportunity, which pushed me into the niche of business English.

To develop personalised lessons for his needs, I drew on free online resources like the Market Leader and Business Result workbooks (both easy to find as PDFs), focusing especially on sales language and pitching. This friend became my first loyal student, and the six-month deadline he set for himself kept me motivated to deliver real results.

Moving to Online Tutoring Platforms

With this experience under my belt, I applied to online tutoring platforms like Preply and iTalki, using business English as my selling point while still teaching general English to students who wanted it. Students came from all over the world, and as I built up reviews, my profile gained more visibility – creating a kind of snowball effect toward steady bookings.

Don’t Undervalue Yourself Early On

If there’s one piece of advice I’d give anyone starting out, it’s this: don’t work for less than you’re worth.

Platforms like Preply already take a significant cut when you’re starting (commission begins at 33%). So if you’re charging their recommended $10/hour, you’re really only earning around $7/hour. Depending on where you live, that might be workable. But after moving back to the UK, that translated to roughly £5/hour — a fraction of the UK’s minimum wage of just under £13/hour.

Your progress may feel slower than other tutors’ at first, but I’d strongly recommend setting your prices at a rate you’re actually comfortable with from day one, rather than underselling yourself to rack up reviews. If you don’t make this change early, you risk resenting your first students – their rate stays locked in at whatever you originally charged (say, $10), even as your listed price rises, unless you renegotiate. And renegotiating comes with its own risk: losing students who can’t afford the new rate.

Going Independent

Once you’ve built a solid client base and developed real relationships with your students, it’s worth considering a shift to private tutoring outside these platforms. Technically, this isn’t allowed under sites like Preply’s terms – but in practice, as long as you have a way of contacting your students directly, you won’t run into trouble for going independent.

Making this move myself was the best decision I made for my financial success. It let me escape the high commission rates and build a client base made up entirely of loyal, direct students.

Building Toward Freedom

From there, the path is about growth – branching into new markets and niches until you’re earning enough to work as a full-time, self-employed tutor, on your own terms, at your own rates, and on your own schedule.

This kind of freedom is something more people are chasing every day, as digital nomad living and remote work become increasingly suited to modern life. If that’s the kind of freedom you’ve been looking for, it all starts with a TEFL course.

Most people sign up for a TEFL course in Spain because they want a qualification. Teach English, travel, open doors… straightforward enough. But here’s what nobody tells you before you book: the certificate is almost the least interesting part.

Moving to Spain to train as an English teacher isn’t just a career move. It’s a full-scale rewiring of how you see yourself and what you think you’re capable of. The classroom techniques matter, sure. But the real education happens in the gaps – on the metro at rush hour, in a tapas bar where your Spanish falters mid-order, in the small victory of finally understanding your landlord’s rapid-fire Catalan.

Increased Resilience

Let me be honest: the first few weeks of moving to Spain can be humbling. You’ll get lost. You’ll misunderstand something important. You’ll probably overpay for a SIM card because you nodded along to terms you didn’t fully grasp.

But here’s what happens next. You figure it out. You navigate Spanish bureaucracy — an achievement worthy of its own certificate. You learn which metro line takes you home and which one deposits you somewhere entirely unexpected. You open a bank account in a language you’re still learning. Small wins stack up, and quickly.

Barcelona, in particular, has a way of demanding your participation. It’s not a city that lets you stay passive. The noise, the energy, the packed streets of the Gothic Quarter at midday, the late dinners that don’t start until 10pm — all of it pulls you out of whatever comfort zone you arrived with. This is one of the most underrated parts of taking a TEFL course in Barcelona. You are not only learning how to teach English. You are learning how to trust yourself in a completely unfamiliar environment. There’s a particular kind of confidence that comes from solving real problems in a foreign country, and it doesn’t come from any textbook.

By the end of the course, you’ve built something that doesn’t show up on your CV: a quiet, durable resilience. That feeling doesn’t fade when you leave Spain. It follows you into job interviews, new cities, and difficult conversations. You’ve already proven to yourself that you can adapt. Future challenges start to look more manageable because you have evidence – real, lived evidence – that you’ve navigated harder things.

Expanding Empathy and Understanding

There’s a moment that happens to almost everyone who moves abroad. You’re trying to explain something simple, and the words just won’t come. Maybe you’re at a pharmacy trying to describe a headache, or you’re in a café and you’ve blanked on a basic word. You feel exposed. A little foolish. Suddenly, you are the beginner in the room.

That feeling is the most useful teaching tool you’ll ever acquire when it comes to teaching English abroad.

Living in Spain means you experience first-hand what it feels like to communicate across a language barrier. That experience makes you a more empathetic, patient, and perceptive English teacher. You understand that language learning isn’t purely cognitive — it’s emotional. Your future students aren’t just memorising grammar rules. They’re risking embarrassment every time they open their mouths.

Taking a TEFL course in Barcelona places you at a genuine crossroads of cultures and perspectives. The city draws people from everywhere: South America, Northern Europe, Asia, other parts of Spain. Your classmates might include a graphic designer from Berlin, a nurse from Colombia, a recent graduate from Seoul. Conversations tend to go further than you’d expect. If you decide to study Spanish while you’re there (and you really should, because it transforms the whole experience) you’ll know exactly what it feels like to be a beginner again. That vulnerability is uncomfortable and valuable in equal measure. It will shape the kind of English teacher you become.

A Fresh Start and a New Sense of Possibility

This one is harder to explain, but it might be the most important shift that comes from moving to Spain for a TEFL course.

When you change your surroundings completely, you start to question assumptions you didn’t even know you were holding. The way you’ve always structured your days. The career path that felt inevitable. The version of your life that seemed fixed.

For many people, a TEFL course abroad represents exactly that: a fresh start. Not in a clichéd, wipe-the-slate-clean way, but in a genuinely practical sense. Teaching English in Spain can lead to a job you love, a language you speak, friendships that span continents, and a more expansive understanding of what your life can actually look like.

Some people finish their TEFL course in Barcelona and stay, picking up teaching work in local language schools or through private tutoring. Others use it as a launchpad, moving on to teach English in Asia, Latin America, or the Middle East. And for plenty of people, it’s simply the experience that proved they could take a leap when it mattered.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, uninspired, or quietly fed up with the same routine, moving to Spain might be less of a risk than staying put. The course gives you a qualification, but the experience gives you perspective – and perspective has a way of changing everything.

Why TEFL Provides The Structure You Need Whilst Moving Abroad

Here’s the practical reality: moving abroad alone can feel chaotic. No routine, no familiar faces, no one expecting you anywhere. A TEFL course in Barcelona changes that equation from the moment you arrive. You land with a purpose — a clear schedule, a cohort of people in the same slightly-overwhelmed boat, and trainers who’ve guided hundreds of people through this exact transition. You have somewhere to be every morning. You have people to eat lunch with, debrief alongside, and explore the city with on weekends.

This structure doesn’t limit the adventure, instead it makes it sustainable. Joining a TEFL course means you step into a supportive learning environment instead of landing in a new country without direction. Someone helps you understand the visa process. The paperwork gets streamlined. You’re not navigating it all alone.

That combination of genuine freedom with a solid foundation is what makes taking a TEFL course in Spain one of the smartest ways to make the move abroad for the first time. You get the independence, the exploration, and the sense of possibility, without the paralysing uncertainty of having no structure around you.

A gap year experience. A short adventure before going back to a “real job.” That idea has changed a lot over the last decade, especially in places like Spain.

Today, people join TEFL courses for completely different reasons. Some want to move abroad permanently. Some are exhausted from corporate life and want work that feels more human and flexible. Others are looking for a career change, a slower lifestyle, or simply a way to experience Europe while doing something meaningful.

And Spain keeps attracting people because daily life here feels very different from what many are used to back home.

The weather helps, of course, but it goes much deeper than sunshine. Life in Spain is social in a way that many countries are not anymore. People stay outside late. Cafés are full at night. Neighbours actually talk to each other. You walk everywhere. Dinner is not rushed. Weekends are not spent entirely inside shopping centres or sitting at home exhausted from work.

For many people, arriving in Barcelona feels like entering a completely different rhythm of life.

That is part of why TEFL still feels worth it in Spain in 2026. It is not only about teaching English. It is about building a completely different lifestyle around your work.

Why Barcelona Attracts So Many TEFL Students

Barcelona has become one of the biggest international TEFL hubs in Europe, and once you arrive, it becomes very easy to understand why.

The city attracts people from all over the world. Inside a TEFL classroom, you might meet students from the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Brazil, South Africa, Poland, or the Netherlands, all learning together in the same environment.

That mix creates a very different atmosphere from traditional university programs.

People arrive with completely different life stories. Some are in their early twenties looking for adventure. Others already had careers in business, psychology, marketing, hospitality, design, or education and are now searching for something more flexible and international.

The conversations become part of the experience itself.

You finish teaching practice and suddenly everyone goes together for tapas in Gràcia. Someone suggests a weekend trip to Valencia. Another person found a cheap Ryanair flight to Prague. Someone else already got an interview at a language academy and shares tips with the group.

Many friendships formed during TEFL courses continue for years afterward.

That social side matters more than people expect because moving abroad can feel overwhelming at first. Having an international group around you immediately makes the transition much easier.

The Lifestyle Side of Teaching English in Spain

One thing people rarely talk about enough is how different daily life feels once you are actually living in Barcelona instead of visiting as a tourist.

When you are travelling somewhere for three days, you only see the highlights. When you live there, you start building routines inside the culture itself.

You begin recognising the bakery owner near your apartment. You discover quiet cafés where locals work during the day. You learn which beaches are less touristy. You slowly adapt to Spanish schedules, later dinners, slower mornings, and a much more social lifestyle overall.

And Barcelona has a balance that many cities struggle to achieve.

It feels international without losing its local identity.

You still hear Catalan spoken everywhere. Traditional neighbourhood festivals still happen. Local markets are full every morning. Elderly people still sit outside talking for hours. At the same time, the city is filled with international students, digital nomads, creatives, entrepreneurs, and people building lives from all over the world.

For TEFL students, that combination creates a very exciting environment.

You are not isolated inside a tourist bubble. You become part of a city that is genuinely alive.

Is It Easy to Find Work Teaching English in Spain?

It is important to be realistic here.

Spain is not one of the highest-paying TEFL destinations in the world, and TEFL itself is not some magical shortcut to instant success. The beginning can feel challenging.

At first, your schedule may look scattered. Some classes happen early in the morning before business meetings. Others happen late in the evening after school hours. You may combine academy classes with private students during your first months.

But demand for English teachers in Spain is still strong, especially in cities like Barcelona and Madrid.

Many professionals need English for work, international business, tourism, or relocation opportunities abroad. Parents want their children learning English earlier than ever. Companies continue investing in business English training for employees.

This means opportunities exist across language academies, private tutoring, business English, exam preparation, online teaching, and conversation classes.

The people who tend to do best are usually the ones who stay flexible and proactive during the beginning instead of expecting everything to happen immediately.

Choosing the Right TEFL Course Matters

One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing the cheapest online TEFL certificate possible without thinking about practical experience.

The reality is that teaching English involves much more than understanding grammar rules.

You need to learn how to explain things clearly, manage groups, create engaging lessons, adapt when activities fail, and help students feel comfortable speaking.

That confidence only comes through real classroom practice.

This is one of the reasons why many students choose the intensive courses at TEFL Barcelona.

One of their most popular courses is the 160 hour Intensive Trinity Certificate in TESOL Course in Barcelona, a four-week program that includes supervised teaching practice with real students.

That practical experience makes a huge difference once interviews start.

Many people finish purely online certificates still feeling terrified of standing in front of an actual classroom. Teaching practice changes that completely because you are already teaching during the course itself while receiving feedback from experienced trainers.

The course is taught in the Eixample district of Barcelona, just a couple of blocks down from the emblematic Sagrada Familia basilica.

And yet this dynamic district is different from the more tourist heavy areas.

The streets where the buildings house both offices and people’s homes are full of shops, independent cafés, bakeries and local restaurants. It feels much more local and residential while still being extremely central.

The school also includes modern classrooms, study areas, Wi Fi, teaching resources, and professional job guidance for students during and after graduation.

That career guidance becomes extremely valuable for people arriving in Spain for the first time.

Understanding where to apply, how hiring seasons work, what academies expect, and how to build your first schedule can save months of confusion.

Many TEFL Students Stay Longer Than Planned

One of the most interesting things about TEFL in Spain is how many people originally arrive planning to stay “just one year” and end up staying much longer.

Some continue teaching for years because they genuinely enjoy the lifestyle. Others eventually move into educational management, curriculum development, teacher training, international schools, or online education.

For many people, TEFL becomes the first step into a much larger international career.

And even for those who eventually move into different industries, the experience itself often changes them permanently.

Living abroad builds confidence very quickly. You learn adaptability, communication skills, independence, and cultural awareness in ways that are difficult to develop staying inside the same environment forever.

So, Is TEFL Worth It in Spain?

For people looking only for high salaries, probably not.

But for people wanting international experience, flexibility, cultural immersion, meaningful work, and a lifestyle that feels more balanced and social, Spain still offers something very special.

Barcelona especially continues to stand out because it combines professional opportunities with an incredible quality of life, strong international community, beautiful weather, beach access, history, culture, and constant opportunities to meet people from around the world.

And starting with a course that includes real teaching practice, professional support, and an international environment from day one can make the entire transition into teaching abroad much smoother.

That is why so many people still choose to start their TEFL journey in Barcelona every single year.

Teaching in Spain has been a dream for many teachers around the world for years. And who can blame them? The sunny skies, delicious tapas, friendly people, and relaxed lifestyle are just a few of the reasons this country keeps drawing in English teachers from every corner of the globe.

Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones. You trained with us, got your TEFL certificate, landed a teaching offer, and now it’s almost time to step into your first Spanish classroom. It’s exciting, but also a little nerve-racking.

What will your students be like? How do Spanish schools work? Will things be totally different from your home country?

Let’s walk through what you can realistically expect when you start teaching in Spain, from classroom etiquette to some cultural quirks that might take you by surprise.

The School Culture: Less Formal, More Familiar

One of the first things you’ll notice is how relaxed the general atmosphere can be. Spanish schools don’t usually feel stiff or overly formal. Teachers and students often call each other by their first names, and relationships between staff and students are usually friendly and personal.

In many classrooms, the teacher isn’t seen as an authority figure to be feared, but more like a mentor or guide. That doesn’t mean there’s no respect—it just means it’s shown differently. You might find students speaking to you casually, even joking with you early on. That’s part of how they connect.

At first, this friendliness can feel like a lack of discipline, but it’s more about cultural expectations. Spanish classrooms can be loud, but they’re also full of life. Students are often encouraged to speak their mind, and classroom discussions can get passionate.

Classroom Etiquette: The Do’s and Don’ts

There are a few unspoken rules in Spanish classrooms that are good to know:

Be approachable, but clear. You don’t need to act like a boss, but you do need to set clear boundaries from day one. Students respond well to structure—but they won’t follow rules just because you said so. You’ll need to earn their attention.

Don’t expect total silence. Spanish students, especially teenagers, tend to talk more during class than in many other countries. Small side conversations are common. Instead of trying to shut it all down, you’ll need to find ways to keep everyone engaged so they naturally stay focused.

Punctuality is flexible. In Spain, being a few minutes late isn’t a big deal in most schools. You might find students strolling in five minutes after the bell—teachers too. Try not to take it personally or stress about it, unless it becomes a pattern that affects the class.

Dress code? Not really. Most schools don’t have a formal dress code for teachers. Clean, casual clothes that look neat are usually fine. Just avoid shorts, flip-flops, or anything too revealing, and you’ll be good to go.

Your Students: Curious, Social, and Sometimes a Little Too Comfortable

Spanish students are known for being sociable, expressive, and fun. They enjoy interacting, and many of them love English classes because they feel different from the usual textbook-heavy subjects. You might become their favorite teacher just because you give them a chance to speak and be creative.

That said, students might also test boundaries, especially if you’re new or if they sense you’re unsure. It’s not personal—they just want to know what kind of teacher you are. Be warm, but firm. Don’t over-explain rules. Keep things clear and consistent.

Also, expect a lot of questions—sometimes off-topic. Spanish students are naturally curious and often eager to connect. You’ll hear questions like “Where are you from?”, “Do you have a boyfriend?”, “How old are you?” and other things that might feel a little personal. It’s just their way of starting a conversation.

The Teaching Style: You’re in Charge of the Energy

Unlike in some countries where the teacher talks and the students listen, Spanish classrooms often work better when lessons are interactive and fun. You’ll get the best results when you include group work, games, real-life topics, and student-led activities.

Grammar drills and worksheets can still be useful, but they won’t hold attention for long if you rely on them too much. Spanish students enjoy speaking and sharing their opinions, so use that to your advantage.

Also, don’t be surprised if you’re expected to fill in for other teachers, teach extra levels, or even join school events with little notice. Flexibility is part of the job in many schools and academies.

Parents and Admins: What They Expect

If you’re working in a private school or language academy, parents might have high expectations. They may want to know their child is progressing fast or that your classes are fun and practical. You might not have direct contact with them often, but your coordinator will likely pass along feedback.

In public schools, expectations may vary more, and the level of involvement from administration depends a lot on the individual school. Some are very organized. Others are a bit chaotic. Either way, things tend to move slower than in countries like the UK or US, and last-minute changes are common.

Be patient, and don’t expect everything to be perfectly planned out. If things feel disorganized at times, you’re not alone. Most teachers go through the same adjustment phase.

Holidays and Surprises: More Time Off Than You Think

Here’s the good news: Spain has a lot of holidays. Besides summer and Christmas, you’ll get national holidays, regional holidays, and even local town celebrations. Some months have more long weekends than school weeks. This gives you time to rest, travel, and recharge.

On the flip side, some schools might cancel classes last minute due to events or festivals, so be ready for sudden changes in your schedule. Flexibility really is your best friend in Spain.

Ready to Teach in Spain?

Teaching English in Spain is about more than just grammar and vocabulary. It’s about stepping into a different way of life. The culture is warm, the students are full of personality, and every day brings something new.

You won’t always have quiet classrooms, and you won’t always have a perfect lesson. But you’ll have stories, connections, and moments that remind you why you chose to teach in the first place.

So, take a deep breath, bring your best energy, and get ready for a classroom experience that’s as full of flavor as the country itself.

Teaching might be your passion. You might love the idea of helping people learn, exploring new cultures, or standing in front of a class making English come alive. But here’s the truth many new teachers learn the hard way: if the job conditions are bad or don’t match your expectations, even the biggest passion can quickly turn into a nightmare.

You don’t want to find yourself stuck in a split-shift job across three towns, with no support, low pay, and a director who disappears when you need help.

The good news? There are great TEFL jobs out there. But spotting one before you apply or accept the offer takes a bit of knowledge and attention to detail. Whether you’re searching from your home country or already in Spain, here’s how to spot a job that’s actually worth your time and energy.

1. A Clear, Honest Job Ad

Before anything else, look at how the job is presented. A good TEFL job ad should give you a solid picture of what to expect. That means:

Number of teaching hours per week

Type of students (kids, teens, adults)

Location of the classes

Monthly pay or hourly rate

Contract duration

What’s included (materials, training, visa help)

If the ad is too vague or full of buzzwords like “fun working environment” with no real details, that’s a red flag. You don’t need a novel, but you do need transparency.

2. Reasonable Hours and Schedule

A typical full-time TEFL schedule in Spain is around 20 to 25 contact hours per week. But what really matters is how those hours are spread out.

Many academies operate on split shifts. You might teach two hours in the morning and three more in the evening, which means you’re working across a 12-hour window but only being paid for the hours you’re actually in class.

This can be exhausting, especially if your classes are far from home or if there’s no pay for travel time. If the ad or interview doesn’t mention how your hours are arranged, ask.

Look for jobs that:

Group your hours into blocks (e.g., mornings only or evenings only)

Keep most classes in one place

Offer paid preparation time or at least don’t overload you with unpaid admin tasks

3. Fair and Legal Pay

TEFL salaries in Spain vary a lot depending on the city and type of school. But there are some general things to watch out for.

In big cities like Barcelona or Madrid, most academies offer between €1,100 and €1,400 per month for full-time work. Some pay per hour, usually around €13 to €18.

That’s not amazing, but with shared housing and a simple lifestyle, it can be enough to live. Just be careful with jobs that pay much less than the average or that promise to “pay in cash” without a proper contract.

You want a job that:

Pays you on time, via bank transfer

Offers a legal contract

Doesn’t rely on last-minute substitutions or unpaid demo lessons

Teaching without a contract or working more hours than you’re paid for can lead to burnout fast — and in some cases, even legal trouble.

4. Good Communication From the Start

Your first few emails or interviews with a school can tell you a lot. Are they polite? Do they answer your questions clearly? Do they respect your time?

Bad communication at the start often means bad communication throughout the year. You want to work somewhere where people are easy to reach, clear with expectations, and willing to support you.

A few things to look for:

They reply to emails within a few days

They explain next steps and timelines

They are friendly and professional in how they speak with you

Even a small school can be great if it has a team that communicates well.

5. Support for Teachers

Especially if you’re a new teacher, support makes a huge difference. Teaching can feel isolating, especially if you’re the only English teacher or working in a rural area. A good job will offer some kind of structure or at least someone you can go to when things get tricky.

Ask during the interview:

Is there a coordinator or academic manager?

Are materials provided?

Do teachers meet regularly?

Is there a WhatsApp group or shared planning folder?

Even informal support is better than none.

6. The Right Type of Students for You

Some people love teaching five-year-olds with glitter and songs. Others would rather teach adults in company offices. Be honest with yourself about what you enjoy and what you don’t.

If you’re applying to jobs where you’ll teach a type of student you’re not comfortable with, make sure they’ll provide training or that the schedule isn’t too heavy.

Also, find out the class size. Teaching 15 teenagers is very different from teaching three adults in a conversation class.

7. Location, Location, Location

This one seems obvious, but many teachers don’t think it through until they arrive. Is the school in the center of the city or a 45-minute bus ride away? Are you expected to travel between classes?

If you’ll be teaching in multiple locations, ask if travel time is paid or not. It can eat into your day and energy quickly.

8. Real Reviews and Word of Mouth

Before accepting any job, do a quick Google search or check Facebook groups like “TEFL in Spain” or “English Teachers in Barcelona.” You can also search the name of the school + “reviews” or “experience.”

Teachers are usually honest — and if a school has a bad reputation, there’s a good chance someone has mentioned it online.

You can also ask:

What happened to the last teacher?

How long do most teachers stay?

If teachers stay for years, that’s a great sign. If there’s constant turnover, ask why.

9. Your Gut Feeling

It sounds simple, but trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. If the director seems cold or the answers feel vague, take a step back and think it through.

You don’t have to accept the first offer you get. There are plenty of decent jobs, and one that fits your goals is out there — even if it takes a bit longer to find.

Final Words

TEFL can be one of the best decisions you ever make. You get to live abroad, meet new people, and help others grow. But the job itself needs to be right. A bad TEFL job can wear you down. A good one can change your life.

So take your time. Ask questions. Do your research. And remember — if they treat you well from the beginning, it’s a good sign they’ll treat you well once you’re hired.

Becoming an English teacher opens up a world of incredible opportunities. Whether you want to explore new countries, work remotely, or engage with students from diverse backgrounds, teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) offers a fulfilling and rewarding career.

If you’re considering becoming an English teacher, you might wonder if it’s worth investing time and money in a TEFL course. The short answer: absolutely! Let’s break down why this path is worth exploring and how it can help you achieve your personal and professional goals.

Why Become an English Teacher?

1.- Endless Travel Opportunities One of the biggest attractions of becoming an English teacher is the chance to live and work in different countries. English is the world’s most widely spoken second language, meaning there’s a high demand for teachers in countries like Spain, Japan, South Korea, and many more.

Teaching English abroad gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in new cultures, learn new languages, and explore the world, all while earning a salary.

2.- Flexibility and Freedom Beyond teaching in traditional schools, English teachers have the flexibility to work online. Online teaching has skyrocketed in recent years, with many teachers offering private lessons or working for established platforms from the comfort of their homes.

This flexibility allows teachers to create their own schedules, take on as many students as they want, and enjoy the freedom to work from anywhere with an internet connection.

3.- Making a Real Impact Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions, and teaching English is no exception. You get to help students improve their language skills, which can open doors for them in terms of education, career opportunities, and personal growth. Many English learners are motivated to learn for job promotions, study abroad, or connect with people globally.

As a teacher, you get to be a part of their journey and make a meaningful impact on their lives.

4.- A Growing Demand for English Teachers The demand for qualified English teachers continues to grow. With globalization and international business communication heavily relying on English, more schools, language institutions, and online platforms are hiring TEFL-certified teachers to meet the need.

Whether you’re in a major city or a more remote location, there’s always a need for English teachers, ensuring job security and consistent opportunities.

The Value of TEFL Certification

Now that you understand the perks of teaching English, let’s talk about how a TEFL course can help you get there. TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is essential for anyone who wants to teach English abroad or online. It equips you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in the classroom.

Here are some reasons why investing in a TEFL course is worth it:

1.- Gain Teaching Skills While you may already be fluent in English, teaching the language is a completely different skill. A TEFL course helps you understand how to create effective lesson plans, manage a classroom, teach grammar, and develop engaging activities for students.

You’ll learn techniques to motivate learners, assess their progress, and provide meaningful feedback.

2.- Hands-On Experience Most reputable TEFL courses include practical teaching components. At TEFL Barcelona, for instance, we offer hands-on teaching practice with real students. This allows you to gain valuable experience and build your confidence before stepping into a full-time teaching role.

Our courses include at least seven hours of face-to-face teaching practice, so you’ll leave feeling ready to take on the classroom.

3.- Internationally Recognized Certification A TEFL certification is recognized worldwide, making it your passport to teaching opportunities across the globe. Whether you want to work in Asia, Europe, or Latin America, a TEFL certificate opens doors to well-paying jobs in various countries.

At TEFL Barcelona, we offer internationally recognized certifications such as the 120-hour TEFL course accredited by Lamar University, the 160-hour Trinity CertTESOL course accredited by Trinity College London, and the 190-hour TQUK Level 5 Award in TESOL.

4.- Job Support Completing a TEFL course doesn’t just give you a certificate—it provides you with access to career support and job placement assistance.

At TEFL Barcelona, we go the extra mile to support our graduates in finding teaching jobs after they complete their courses. Our network of schools, agencies, and private clients around Barcelona ensures that our trainees can quickly secure teaching positions.

5.- Work in Amazing Locations With a TEFL certificate, you can work in beautiful destinations like Spain, Thailand, or Costa Rica. In Spain, for example, English teachers are highly sought after, especially in cities like Barcelona.

By completing a TEFL course with us in Barcelona, you’ll not only get to live in one of the most vibrant cities in Europe, but you’ll also be able to take advantage of the high demand for English teachers in the region.

Spain did not have a good rating in the past when it came to English proficiency. It lagged behind many countries in Europe. But things are changing now and you can tell by the growing demand of English teachers in Spain.

More Spanish people want to learn English as a foreign language. It’s obvious that learning English has many benefits and Spaniards have realized it. And, education institutes, including schools and private entities, are looking for qualified candidates to teach English as a foreign language in Spain.

If you are planning to live in Spain or want to come here as a student, TEFL Courses can be a good option. It can work both as a career and a way to earn while staying in Spain.

Spain Had Poor English Proficiency in Europe

According to a study by Education First, Spain was one of the worst European countries in 2011 when it came to English proficiency. It only did well compared to Russia and Turkey. But things turned around and there were surprising results. For instance, since 2014, Spain has improved its ranking. It has now made its place among the moderate proficiency countries.

This change was brought about by the fact that speaking English can be very beneficial. In fact, companies in Spain are asking for proof of English proficiency in the CVs of candidates. It doesn’t really matter whether you want to work abroad or within Spain, English proficiency is a must in the majority of the cases.

The increasing popularity of English has led to the increase in demand for TEFL teachers as well.

Why English Teaching Jobs are in Demand in Spain

There are so many reasons why more and more people in Spain want to learn English. As a matter of fact, this is especially popular among the youth. Compared to the older generation, they want to explore more opportunities and even become a part of the global market. It is safe to say that English is the language of international business.

Here are the top three reasons why there is a huge demand for English classes in Barcelona and why more people are investing in learning the language:

English Can Bring More Opportunities

Economic crisis is one of the main reasons why so many people want to learn English. Young people want more opportunities when it comes to work. To work in countries like the UK, they need to have English proficiency. Likewise, working in other countries outside Europe will also require English proficiency. Due to these reasons, more people want to learn and master the English language.

Speaking English fluently can open new doors for both job seekers and businesses. During the crisis, Spain, like other countries, benefited by exporting. Being a widely spoken language, English proficiency offers lots of benefits. Which is why people want to learn English and they are looking for institutes that offer these classes.

And, if you know English or want to work/live in Spain, working as a TEFL teacher can benefit you. You will need a certificate to prove that you’re a qualified TEFL teacher and you can live in Spain and earn .

English makes Communication Easier

English can help Spanish people communicate better when they are abroad or when working for an international company. Moreover tourism is one of the thriving industries in Spain and knowing English can benefit local businesses in so many ways.

Students who wish to study outside Spain in countries like the UK or the USA can benefit from learning English. This is also one of the reasons why there is an increase in demand for English teachers.

Job seekers too want English proficiency in their CV. It will not only make them a qualified candidate; it will also increase their chances of finding jobs abroad.

Businesses Want to Expand

Globalization has made it easier for businesses to reach their target audiences across the globe. Countries like China have become a global supplier. Businesses in Spain want to do it too. The industry wants to expand and reach new territories. At the same time, Spain also wants to attract international businesses.

600€ each month for an apartment. 35€ for lunch. 186€ here, 12€ there… As a result, money disappears at the speed of light. How to avoid this? Here are several recommendations.

Accommodation

The first and perhaps the main ingredient in our dish called “reasonable economy” will be accommodation. Because that will be the biggest part of your expenses in Barcelona. And here are some tips which will help you save money.

Let’s start with the accommodation search. Try to find a place on your own, without the help of agents, because you will spend a decent amount on agents. You can search in the Idealista and Badi apps. In the second one, there are more ads placed directly by owners.

The average cost of a room is 450-500 euros. If you see a good but very cheap option, be careful, most likely they are scammers. Also, to avoid problems and losing money, make sure you sign a contract ( and read it carefully! ).

The cost of a room or apartment depends on many factors. The cheapest options are not in the city centre. However, Barcelona has a good public transport system, so it won’t be a problem. If you check out the districts, Nou Barris is one of the most affordable districts, along with Sant Andreu and some parts of Sant Martí, Sants-Montjuïc, and Horta-Guinardó. On the contrary, the districts of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Eixample, Gràcia, Ciutat Vella, and Les Corts are the most expensive.

Food

The next station on the way to an economical and high-quality lifestyle will be food. One of the most affordable supermarkets is Mercadona, also Dia is pretty cheap. But it is better to buy fruit and vegetables in the local markets.

Of course, it’s more economical to cook your own food, but always eating at home can be boring. To diversify your menu, try what is called “menu del día”, this is the equivalent of a business lunch. The average cost of a “menu del día” is 10-15 euros. And here are a few places where you can satisfy your hunger with a tasty meal for a small cost:

Bar Morryssom

El Señorío de Peru

Sopa

La Pepita

Cervecería Catalana

Can Codina

La Muscleria

Thai Barcelona

Ciudad Condal

Hostal Olivera

To be continued…

Entertainment and cultural recreation

So, we have covered our basic needs. It’s time to move on to entertainment and cultural recreation.
